Prisoners No More

Before I left for vacation, I had the opportunity to attend The Leadership Summit.  It was a great experience and I learned so much about leadership.  I will be a better leader in business, in ministry, and in my family because of the experience.

The speakers at the summit were outstanding, but there was one moment during the conference that stood out above the rest.  Immediately after an interview with Catherine Rohr, the CEO and founder of the nonprofit Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP), a group of former prisoners who had graduated from her program were introduced on the stage.

The men were lined up across the stage and a microphone was passed along as they each told us their story.  Each man couldn’t wait to receive the microphone and each man didn’t want to give it up.  They were so proud.  The stories of life change were amazing and the audience rose to their feet and applauded these new leaders.  After the session, as I entered the cafe at my church, I saw one of the men eating lunch at a table with his parents.  His parents were smiling from ear to ear and they were so proud of their son.  Maybe for the first time in his adult life.

These men were prisoners no more.  In fact, they were free long before they were actually released from those prison walls.  All because a great leader named Catherine responded in obedience to God’s call on her life to help these men overcome their past and thrive in the future.
