Hurricane Ike & A Lesson Learned

Hurricane Ike is now gone, but there are millions of people in Houston and surrounding counties that will be dealing with the destruction left by Ike for a long, long time.

My family is safe and we escaped with only minor damage to our home.  Part of our fence is down.  We have some tree damage.  And our roof is damaged enough in one spot that water is leaking in above our garage.  The damage for many others, even in the northern suburbs where we live, is so much worse.  Our power came back on yesterday, but there are hundreds of thousands that are expected to be without power for 2 – 4 weeks!

Hurricane Ike has taught me an important lesson that I hope I never forget and it is this…….

Some of our greatest blessings in life are the little things that we usually take for granted.  Don’t wait until these little things are gone before recognizing that these little things are actually big blessings that we should be extremely thankful for.

Here is a short list of little things that I now see as big blessings…….

Walking into a room and turning on a light switch and seeing light.

The comforts of an air conditioner.

An unlimited supply of clean, drinkable water.

Ice cubes.

Refrigerators and freezers.

Microwaves, dishwashers, washers & dryers.

Freshly brewed coffee in the morning.

A house to live in that keeps the rain out.

A restaurant on every corner.

The ability to drive to a grocery store and get fresh food.

The ability to communicate using phones and computers.

Access to information via the internet and television.

Not having to conserve fuel because you don’t know when you will be able to get your next tank of gas.

Traffic lights.

The little things are big blessings.  If you can, take a moment out of your day today and make a contribution to an organization that will be blessing the Hurricane Ike victims.  Here is a link to some of the things that my church, Woodlands Church, will be doing to make an impact.  There are millions in this area that need our help.
