Costa Rica 09 // LaLo

I had the privilege of getting to know a man named Steve Edwards this week.

The people of La Carpio, Costa Rica lovingly refer to him as LaLo de La Carpio. LaLo is an ordinary man that our extraordinary God is using in an extraordinary way.

LaLo visited La Carpio on a mission trip with his church in Houston, TX several years ago and never went home. He is now a full-time missionary in La Carpio and runs a community center in the village.

On Wednesday, LaLo showed us around La Carpio and introduced us to the people. As we walked the streets, the impact that LaLo has had on the people was evident. Every boy and girl would run and jump into his arms with giant hugs. He knew them all by name.

On Day 1, he gave us a tour of the community center. The community center is a nice, new building constructed in phases over the years with donations and assistance from churches like mine. It serves as an oasis of hope in the middle of a poverty stricken area. It is now the town center of La Carpio.

During the tour, LaLo pointed in the direction of his office. I was confused because we had almost completed the tour and there was just no room for an office in that building. But when he pointed, he was pointing to the street in front of the community center. He spends his days on the streets of La Carpio engaging with the children, teaching them to read, supporting their families, coaching them in soccer, and just loving them.

Coaching the boys in soccer is one of his greatest joys. Last night I had the privilege of presenting LaLo with a bin full of brand new soccer shoes that were graciously donated by some friends of mine. He was so thankful for the gift and explained to us how this simple gift was going to have a big impact.

Watch this video of LaLo from last night.

Thanks for all the photos. I went last year with the group that built the bridge. I is great to see all the kids and what Steve has continued to do. It changed my life and I am sure it will do the same for you.
